Avarakayi or avarekalu is a seasonal delicacy in Karnataka. It’s available around September and is the freshest during the last quarter of the year. As a kid i was not very fond of it but as it became hard to get my love for it started increasing. One might find atleast a few hundred recipes using this one ingredient online. This is version 1 of avarekalu usli. This is how my momma taught me and is super easy and super tasty. We eat this as a side dish or with boiled akki rotti and is a super duper combo. I use frozen Lilva papdi the north indian name for avarekalu but fresh tastes best if you can get your hands on it. The sone’ smell the way my dad calls it, is what makes fresh avarekalu so tantalizing. In the thali picture above is Version 2 of avarekalu usli which is also available in my blog if you prefer that. Either recipe you pick i promise you won’t be disappointed. Happy cooking!
